Accommodation, Crew

Greetings from the Globetrotter!
The EUCO 2008 crew moved onsite at 11am yesterday and have been busy preparing for your arrival into London. Yesterday we unpacked a van full of equipment and supplies, set up our Event Office in the Boardroom at the Globetrotter, and put together over 900 delegate pouches (these are the pouches you receive when you check in and contain your badge, the personalised information for your tour and sightseeing choices; your Oyster Card; drinks vouchers for Friday night and more…).
Today, the crew along with early arrival volunteers will be assembling the delegate “goody” bags. All the cool stuff you get on checking in. I’d tell you what’s inside… but it’s a secret!
After some pizza and a session in the -cheap- Globetrotter Bar (I recommend the Apple Sours and Lemonade!) we all settled down for the night in the Globetrotter’s comfortable beds.
The website is keeping nice and busy… unfortunately it’s now too late to request any changes to sightseeing, accommodation or anything else - this info has now already been submitted to our suppliers and badges and documentation has been printed and collated. It’s great to see that already 15 people have printed their E-Ticket today (and it’s only 07:30)! Remember - it really speeds things up and makes it easier for everyone if you arrive prepared- with your E-Ticket and PhotoID.

Things for delegates to think about today:

I’m busy packing today, and soon you will be to (if you’re not in London already!!).
It can sometimes be tricky to know what to pack for EUCO, especially if it’s your first time. To help you we’ve put together a list of things you need to pack.
You can find the list on the EUCO 2008 website:
http://www.euco2008.com/index.php?cat=content&page=cms&CatID=128
From some of the enquiries we’ve received in the last few days, I wanted to point out the following important stuff:
Last but not least, you need to pack your EUCO 2008 E-Ticket (log in to your profile and print it off today) and Photo ID (like a passport, national ID card or photo drivers licence).

Compliance & Risk
No Comments
On July 1st 2007, England introduced a new law to make virtually all enclosed public places and workplaces in England smokefree. A smokefree England ensures a healthier environment, so everyone can socialise, relax, travel, shop and work free from secondhand smoke.
Anyone who doesn’t comply with the new smokefree law will be committing a criminal offence.
Anyone who smokes in a smokefree place could face an on the spot fine of GBP50 (or GBP200 if the matter goes to court)for smoking in a smokefree place, whilst anyone in charge of smokefree venue could face fines for two separate offences: failing to prevent smoking in a smokefree place and failing to display no-smoking signs.
So take care and don’t smoke inside any building or enclosed space.

Stand on the right
We have an unspoken rule on London Underground escalators: always stand on the right. Many a visitor to our city has been caught out by this rule as it’s not made clear when you arrive, but if you stand in the way of a London commuter they’ll soon let you know!
The left-hand side of the escalators is for walking down, and be aware some people run so you want to keep out of their way!
Generally Londoners are quite polite when they ask you to move to the right: you’ll hear a loud ‘excuse me’ in your ear, which although it might shock you, it’s better than other things they could say.
Remember to keep your luggage also to the right-hand side of the escalator as you don’t want it to get knocked down.
Some of the escalators are incredibly long so get used to standing on the right and watching the commuters rush around, or you’ll get too tired for your days sight-seeing if you try to keep up.
Tubes not 24 hour
Be prepared, London tube trains do not run 24 hours!
During the week, trains start around 5am from the ends of the lines so reach more central parts around 5.30-6am. On Sundays, tubes start around 7am.
Tube stop each day around 11.30pm-12.30am.
When the tube stops, don’t give up hope of getting back to your hostel. Public transport is still available in the form of night buses. Night bus routes are similar to the daytime bus routes, but have an ‘N’ prefix. It’s always best to check with your hostel reception which night buses go nearby.
Luggage and newspapers
Never leave your belongings unattended, and allow yourself time to check you haven’t forgotten anything before you need to go as left luggage causes security alerts every day which means tube stations have to close as customer safety is paramount on the underground system.
London has lots of free newspapers but please do not leave your paper on the tube as it is considered littering, which carries a fine. Take your paper with you and dispose of it in a recycling bin outside of the station.
Stand behind the yellow line
All tube platforms have a yellow line marked about a foot from the edge where the train will arrive. While waiting for your train do not step over this line as there is obvious danger from falling in front of a train or being hit by a train you weren’t expecting.
Not everyone on the tube is a tourist!
London is big, bustling city full of people who actually live in London and work in London - they often need to get places in a hurry. Always bear this in mind and don’t get in the way of people. Be aware of what’s happening around you and don’t block any passages or platforms.
